A rather tender subject...

canibalism! Who here has resorted to it during long road trips? OK, OK, sorry... that's too personal, I know. I was really wondering about first aid kits... what people carried, and what people wish they had carried, in the real world.

I want to put together a kit that will fit under the seat of my bike. Not much room there, so I'm trying for a minimalist "but still useful" kit.

I've been thinking along the lines of:
* Latex Gloves
* antibiotic ointment
* cloth tape
* larger non-stick bandage pads
* band-aids
* leatherman multi-tool with scissors
* Sunscreen?
* Acetaminophen, Loratadine, Progestin, Haldol...

This would be the "always with the bike" kit... backup and hopefully compliment for whatever would be in the luggage for trips or normal use.

What are the group's thoughts?

-wet naps or baby wipes are nice for cleaning your hands after getting them all dirty fixing your greasy bike.

-extra strength exedrin is always nice to have

-i always have a cell phone and an AAA card

-an extra pair of cheapo sunglasses is nice too for if you have really sensitive eyes and you just ran over your nice pair.

i'd put a roll of gauze in there it can be used in place of a bunch of things like the bandaids or could even be used MacGuyver style to suicide shift if you end up messing up your ankle or something.

Are you a psychiatrist? How exactly do you obtain Haldol? Hopefully you don't plan to use it on someone else, as you would possibly face a huge lawsuit. Also, if you're the one requiring Haldol, you won't really be in a state of mind able to administer it to yourself (most people who really need it, will fight against it tooth and nail). Do you expect a bystander to inject you with Haldol? Interesting...

And you'll have to educate me here - for what purpose would you want Progestin? And what about Loratadine? Are these for only yourself? Please explain...

I think a first aid kit is always a good idea, and a lot of your items make sense. I guess I'm just a bit confused about the prescribed meds that you've mentioned.

Baby wipes and gauze roll sound like good additions to me... but everyone knows that rigging a suicide shifter takes 14lb test fishing line and a paper clip. ...not a bad idea.

LOL... I'm glad SOMEONE was paying attention.

Loratadine is claratin (antihistamine). Acetaminophen is one ingredient in excedrin and a decent analgesic. Progestin and Haldol were there to be laughed at. Why? Progestin isn't exactly a first aid type medication, and while haldol (which is available in tablet form in case you don't like needles) *should* be, it isn't either.


The canabalism question was completely serious though.

Acetaminiphin - general pain relief
Loratadine - hay fever symptoms (a.k.a Claratin)
Progestin - birth control
Haldol - shizophrenia
