You don't have to be young to be a squid

#1 Unread post by kabob983 »

So, I'm driving on the road and I see a bike up ahead of me. I can tell it's a sportsbike of some sort and I catch up to him at a red light. Behold...it's a middle aged guy on a Honda RC51...wearing his Sunday bests and a bicycle helmet. A bicycle helmet that doesn't even fit well I might add.

I thought once you hit a certain age the stupidity was magically supposed to dissappear!!

Yesterday I saw some kid riding a dirt bike (no lights/signals/etc) on the road and weaving back and forth through traffic. I'm amazed he wasn't killed, he would zip across to the other side of the road to pass people (this is near the biggest mall in Birmingham, tons of traffic). And this fool is wearing a dirt helmet and tee-shirt/shorts/sandals. I'm wondering where all the intelligence in our society has gone?

Unfortuantely these are the people everyone including my wife and daughter see or hear about and relate to me. Even though I've been riding for 36 years and I consider myself to be very conservative, my wife and daughter drive me crazy.

Even my own friends and i went riding and my friend carlos is wearing his sweater. it was a pretty hot day but he was still cold enough to wear something. i told him if your going to have to wear extra clothing you should wear your jacket. but he disagreed with me. one day hell learn.

The Tricycle squid label will change as you make more posts. It is just a cute way of letting everyone know how much you've posted , not your experience on a bike...

Well, not very many get to start at the top in anything, except paratroopers..we mostly start at the bottom and work our way up...squid is the entry level or bottom here...make some more posts and you'll be elevated to the next level in no time...do what a lot of the new comers do...just go around and say hello to everybody or throw in your two cents on a topic. It won't be long and you'll be a regular...

I work at a hardware store (True Value) and it's been there for like 40 years so we get all kinds of people who come by. Well, one day a dude came up wearing shorts, flip-flops (not even sandals) and a wifebeater undershirt. I asked him why he was wearing just that and he said he lived right around the corner. I wanted to say something about how most accidents occur close to home but then I remembered my helmet motto: "If you've got something worth to protect then you'll protect it!"

Over here, it's more often the stupidity happens in the "older" riders. Not those that have been riding for years, but what we refer to as "Bambis" (Born Again Middle aged BIkerS) It is within this section that most of the accidents seem to occur. (this is a generalisation, not a set rule!!) It seems that they last rode way back when a 500cc bike would top out at 65mph, so they think "Ah, an R6 is only an extra 100cc - that shouldnt be a problem" And the inevitable ensues.
It is these people also that seem to be the ones to not bother with kitting up properly - There was a guy at a recent bike night i went to, wearing shorts and flip-flops... his GF on pillion was similarly dressed, too....
So, no you definately do not have to be young to be stupid!
Don't give up.

Not now, not soon, not after being continually knocked down.

If you never give up, you can never truly fail.
