The only way to do this legally is to carry it unloaded in a bag or backpack. If you do this, there shouldn't be any problems if you get pulled over since that's the only way to do it on a bike - you can't very well separate yourself more from the firearm than that. If you have a CCW, then you can have it loaded and wherever you want, but good luck getting one of those in the peoples republic of CA.

A fine but important distinction: It is not illegal to lane split in California. That's similar to but not the same as "completely legal". Cops can't cite you for breaking a "no splitting" law (like they can in Nevada) but they can cite you for a number of other violations *because* you are splitting if they want. It's all up to the cop.
Ride it like you think owning it matters.

not to get to complicated...but it is legal in California. The proper term would be "lane sharing". They (cops) can ticket you...if you are riding the dots or the center line...because then you are not in a lane.

The speed....to me and from what I have heard from other people....seems to be a grey area. My best advice... do what feels comfortable. If you take your example...you can split traffic only 15mph over. Then would you split traffic going 55mph? Probably not.....

From my experience....make sure you are 110% on top of your game...before you go splitting lanes. Remeber that most Cali cages drivers...think it is ill-legal to split lanes...because they do not know it is legal. Also they do not have to lane share with you. You might also want to try and ackknowledge...a cage driver that might see you coming...and give you a little more space...they are the best cage drivers...ever. Also they may help us riders....because other cages see the effort put forth by your actions.

I did my first bit of lane-splitting the other day. It was quite thrilling. It is definitely a rush being so close to two vehicles. Luckily all the people I was around saw me and gave me plenty of room. Still kinda scary though

One and only time I lane split. Got a ticket. Cops in New Jersey will pull you over in a heart beat. So sit there in that 100 degree heat with your head baking and tough it out.
