Or get a dirt bike or mountain bike and practice riding in gravel so you'll know how to handle it if you run into it on the road.

The basic idea for handling gravel is simple: keep the bike upright and avoid braking and control inputs, if possible, otherwise keep them to a minimum.

I can handle gravel just fine.

It's that damn jump that got me.

You can always go find some road knobbies for your bike. I heard that someone managed to put on such tires on a GPZ which I think is similar to your 500. Whenever I get into those rough spots I feather the brakes and keep low throttle or none when turning... then again I have pretty agressive tires.

An alternate would be getting a V-strom, KLR's or those cool BMW's.
One thing you can count on: You push a man too far, and sooner or later he'll start pushing back.

Lesson learned.
Why were you trying to negotiate gravel on a streetbike at 25 mph? :frusty: You were going way too fast for the surface and you got pwn3d. Big surprise.

in gravel:
Lean over
pin throttle
whip the "O Ring" end around
and go

Or play it safe, either way. good thing you're okay.

I'd pay to see it though.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Sure, I've got a 10 spd in the garage. It's all yours.
