When I was driving my own car at 17, a '96 Honda Civic hatchback, my parents and I were paying roughly $1200 every six months with myself listed as the primary driver on the vehicle. That kept the same price until I raised the deductible to $1,000, where the costs went down to $600 every six months. I'm now 21 and it's still $600 every six months, no accidents, one speeding ticket.
I purchased my bike when I was 20, insurance for a full year was a shade under $400, I think.
However, I'm fairly sure if I bought a new 600cc sportsbike, my insurance would be a LOT more expensive. So start with an old, "slow" bike and enjoy the savings.
