so i have 2K in the bank, i'll get 2K from the car accident case, and i'll get another 2K, to say the least, from the theft case.

so that's 6K in total. i'll see if can get a good deal on a 600, install lojack and still have some money left on the bank in case i lose my job.

then i'll register it to both me and my dad so that i can include it in his insurance. i'll just pay him for the bike's share on his premium.

AAA doesn't insure a bike unless you also have a car insured w/ them. AAA gave me the best quotes so far. i checked dairlyland but they don't have bike insurance service in CA.

but then again, i dunno if my dad will agree to that.

i think i can survive w/o a car. i don't have a GF and i don't carry too much when i go to work and school.

maybe there's still hope.
Man, don't you WANT a girlfriend?

You don't ever have to cart stuff around to family occasions, get togethers with friends, etc.? Don't you cart home books from the library?

With all due respect, Hero, I think your priorities are messed up. When I was in university, my car helped a lot - for the above reasons. If you're going to put a vehicle on the road, put a car first.

Also Verm, looking at what you expect to have in the bank, you're not going to have MUCH of an emergency fund left if you go buy that Gixxer. And even if Daddy pays the insurance, what aboot maintenance? Gas? Dude, I've lived the life of a student where I was constantly worried about my low bank account numbers. It's not a nice feeling wondering how you're going to pay this and that. It's added stress onto an already stressful period in life. It's a scary road you're about to go down. Tread softly. . .
Wherever you may roam
May you own your road.

my dad just talked to me earlier... we argue a lot but he's really a cool dad.

anyway... he told me to get a car then just save some money and he'll save money too. he said he'll help me make a down payment on the next bike.

well, that's it then. that's what im going to do.

You're going to make another big down payment and finance a new gixxer? what are you going to do if it's stolen again?

like i mentioned, i will install lojack on it and buy a chain.

also, i'll probably won't be using the bike for everyday commuting like i did before on my 1000.

being weekend rider isn't what i want but i'd be too paranoid to leave a bike alone for long even w/ lojack and a chain.

Aww...dont sacrifice riding because of thieves. Yes it happens, but you can protect yourself by

1) not buying a bike that you cant afford to lose

and

2) using the appropriate locks/protection for it, especially since your bike choices are super-high risk for theft.

If you are really set on buying a new bike and a car and exhausting your cash funds to do it, at least ride it how you want and dont let fear of scum get in the way. Otherwise they have beaten you!

Ummm, last I heard most city police departments don't the system in place to even support Lo-jack. Before you buy it, I would check with the insurance carrier to see what their opinion is. If they don't offer a discount on your premium with it, then it's a waste of $$$$ If they wanna rip your bike off they're gonna do that but I figured you'd a figured that out already.

A chain can be defeated with a hefty set of bolt cutters ($25 or so at the local hardware store, I believe). Lojack can be defeated quickly by theives. It probably takes profressional wrenches all of an hour to strip off the non-essential parts to the bike, identify any aftermarket item (like a Lojack transmitter) and throw it into a river.

If someone wants your bike, they are going to take it, end of story. You're running another huge risk of getting burned.

This this Verm. make two lists
List 1: I want
List 2: I need

When you acheive everything I list 2, THEN start looking at things on list 1
but you have to be totally honest with yourself on the list. Or, if you can't do it honestly on your own, have a family member help you with it to validate items on either list.

To everyone who says you can't get by without a car... I do.

If I have to carry lots of stuff I have a backpack and tank bag.
If I have to carry more, I rent a car from Flexcar.
It prevents people from bumming rides.
As for girlfriends, it filters out lame girls who are afraid to ride on your bike.
It forces you to become more resilient as you must deal with riding in all sorts of sucky conditions.
