Looking for a good disc lock...

Hey all, I was just looking for some advice on disc locks. Who's got one and uses it, and is happy with it? I'm going to be moving into the Hollywood area soon and even though I'm going to have a garage for the bike, I think its time to beef up the security a little...any help is appreciated!

I won't recommend a particular brand, but I strongly recommend that you spend the extra $$ and get a disc brake lock with a built-in alarm. While ostensibly it will add a greater degree of security, the main reason to get one with an alarm is for when you accidentally forget to remove the lock. And you will forget. The alarm will keep you from dropping your bike.

Whatever you do, make a special effort to not ride off with one still attatched. You will be buying a new brake rotor.

I tried doing that last weekend. I get on the bike, put the kickstand up, all of a sudden *beep* *beep* *beep*. Damn! I left the lock on. As far as I'm concerned, the alarm has already paid off.

I've made this bonehead mistake FIVE TIMES already!

Luckily, no damage made to the bike or the disc brake itself, though the Kryptonite disc lock is getting chewed into a bit where the rubber is.

And to think I laughed at how pointless the little bright orange reminder cord is. I eat my words everytime I look like a fool and ride off half a foot and come to a crunching stop.

In any case, the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit disc lock and chain evidently work great in preventing your bike from being ridden off. Just make sure to always lock your wheel and don't just turn off the ignition. And obviously, as our beloved VX can attest to, no disc lock will prevent your bike from being picked up and kidnapped, so an alarm or LoJack would be most ideal. But a disc lock and chain is nevertheless a good start. I would recommend my Krptonite lock and chain for sure.

Cool, thanks for the responses everyone....hopefully I'll be able to find a place with a garage or at least a private parking spot on the property, but I think a disc lock would be a good investment. Having a couple grand left to pay on my bike, I don't wanna turn out like our friend VX!

(only kidding VX). Besides, I like to think most theives wouldn't be too attracted to a yellow standard but....don't want to take any chances!
