Helmet Lock Suggestions?

  • Quote

#1 Post by zarakand » Fri May 26, 2006 6:36 am

Now that I have saddle bags again, the helmet lock on my Aero is near impossible to get to. My locker on campus is this tiny thing that my books barely fit into, and they don't offer larger lockers. Besides, walking around campus all day with my helmet I feel like a dolt clamoring for attention. I'd like a solution where I can simply lock the helmet on the bike and forget about it. I'm willing to accept the risks of someone F'n with it, though I think it's pretty minimal. There're quite a few riders on campus, and I always park right near the main entrance.

I was browsing online and the only thing I've found is this, unfortunately it's expensive and requires changing the grips. I love the stock grips on my Aero.

Any suggestions?

Hey, Z.

I lock my helmet to my seat/top of my luggage rack with a regular old MasterLock combination lock (the combo locks seem to have a longer shackle than the key locks, at least the ones I browsed...). I slip the shackle through the D-rings on my helmet, set the helmet on top of the seat towards the rear of the bike, and then lock it around the top of the luggage rack.

Can you find anyplace on the bike (around the turn signals, pedals, etc.) around which you can lock the helmet?

I find it easier to keep the main chrome part in my saddlebag and get the cable into it before mounting it to the securing bolt on the bike. It's a little tricky at first but you'll get the hang of it. I suggest getting the 6 foot cable even if you are only going to hang your helmet from it because it will give you more mounting options and more options on where to place your helmet once locked. Plus you'll also be able to run it through second helmet, jacket, etc.

I think someone has to be really desperate to steal ur helmet, I wouldn't wanta wear anybody elses helmet cause its the same as wearing somebody elses clothes, like someone may have cooties or lice, or bedbugs in their hair. I never lock my helmet, I either place it on the seat or over the mirror and nobody took it.

I hope you remain lucky.... all it takes is one punk teenager to walk past and decide it'd be funny to have a motorcycle helmet. Or one little kid to knock a helmet off the seat and a parent to put it back. Then you have a helmet that's worthless, but you don't know it.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Bahaha! Ya, like i'm gonna leave a $500+ helmet on my bike with a sign that says take me. Either there is a reason nobody wants yours or it's just a matter of time. Any decent helmet has removable/washable liners.

People steal bowling shoes and wear it like it's cool. And that's with hundreds of smelly feet worth of use. I'll be damn if some punk steals my helmet just because I allow it. And leaving it untethered your helmet is just begging for some punk to teach you a lesson.

A friend of mine moved his helmet lock to where the license plate is mounted. Seems to work well for him.
