bike underperforming - misfiring??

#1 Unread post by nabonline »

Hi-
I have kind of a dumb question - what exactly is misfiring, and how can you tell when it is happening?
The reason I ask is because my bike (an old 82 Yamaha xj550) does not seem as quick as it was. Part of this has to do with the fact that the clutch recently began slipping, and when I accelerate to quickly the engine suddenly reves up high rpm and doesn't really go much (thats clutch slipping, right?). U ask about misfiring though because on occasions when it doesn't slip it still seems not to accelerate as quickly as it did, and runs a little rought. And the cylanders on the right are hotter than the ones on the left.
Anyway to make a long question short, what is mnisfiring and how can you tell when its happening?

Thanks - Nathan
