Hi there
I'm thinking of buying a 1973 Honda 250 (street bike- I don't know the model).
It has about 5,000 miles on it. It looks to be in pretty good condition. They're asking $600 for it.
I am kind of a beginner rider- I've got a 73 Honda Trail 90 that I drive around in the neighborhood occasionally.
Is there any advice you can give me on this particular bike?
What to watch out for? advice on things to assess?
Do you have an idea about what kind of gas mileage I could expect out of this bike?
I'm also considering looking for a dirt bke that I could also use on the street. How do dirt bkes compare to street bkes when it comes to gas mileage?
I know this is alot to throw out, but I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me.
Have a great day! Bawanaboy

Buying a UsedBike
For used bike info go see Dan at: http://www.dansmc.com/mc_repaircourse.htm
A '73 is pretty old, so you better be able to wrench your own. Expect all the rubber parts to need replacing. Look for rust, bent frame, misuse. Expect to replace tires, battery, chain/rear sprocket, and a whole lot more if they haven't been replaced in the last 5 years. Old bikes can be great reliable rides but they need much more care than new bikes.
A 250cc bike should get around 80mpg. A 125cc bike should get in the 110mpg range. I'm not sure of the model number for the '73. Check here: http://100megsfree4.com/honda/
As for price, if it doesn't start then it isn't worth much. Check for parts availability from eBay and your local Honda Stealership before you pay up. Price out everything that needs replacing. Old bikes can be expensive.
