Prop it on a stand and rev it up and try to locate the noise

Thanks Pete (and everyone else). I just bought a service manual from ebay (cheap :)). I know something like the above diagram looks like childs play to some of you. but i have no background in this sort of stuff. I find it intimidating. especially since there's noone i can default to if i mess up. Plus I have no real place to work on it.

I'm taking a lesson here from my very long and arduous journey into the world of computers. Even if something is easy for everyone else, I could still manage to muck it up :|

Is the noise a squeal or a squeak? My bike had some serious squeaking from the rear wheel. It turned out that the splines were lacking grease.

Well, i'm not sure i know the difference, but I would say its a squeak. Like i said it started after locking the rear wheel abit by accident. Could that be a grease issue? God I hope when I go out there again it will just be gone - not likely though

Squeak, squeal, damn I had em' both, but coming from the front wheel...

Pulled the bloody thing off to find two old bearings that were near to being toast, and it looks like the speedo gear unit assembly is gone as well. It turns very stiffly and is full of corosion. So, it's off to the parts dept for new bearings seals and gear unit, tomorrow...

Well, i went out today to take a spin and guess what. No more squeaking. SO i rode around for about an hour. When I came back, as i was putting my bike into my backyard I noticed it was back. I have a feeling its nothing too problematic.

Yeah I plan to as soon as I can find one within reach. I contacted a mechanic that does house calls, but i'm not sure if he does bikes.

Is your rear brake disc or drum?

If it's a disc brake, then it could be just normal disc brake squeal. The squeal is caused by high frequency vibrations between the piston and the back of the pad. If that's what's causing your noise, it's not a big deal. It can often be cured by pulling the brake pads out and applying a cleverly named product called "Disc Brake Quiet" to the back of your brake pads. Can be found at the local auto parts tore.
