This is just a quick tip for your guys/gals. If you wet your laces or get them damp before tying, they will stay tied. I don't bother doing it but it works

Hehe, I just did this about a week ago with my running shoes, except I got my laces wrapped around the rear brake. Not exactly fun but I was able to correct it when I came to my next stop. I now wear military jungle boots and wrap the laces around the top of the boot & double knot them so I won't be having shoelace issues. Maybe in the future when I get more hardcore I might get some of the fancier riding boots I've seen pictured on this forum.

The laces don't come far enough down the boot to catch on the shifter (they end before the toe cap) and I tuck them in to the top of the boot, just like I was taught in basic.
I wouldn't be caught dead wearing anything but heavy leather or motorcycle-specific boots to ride in.

this is one of the things i try to impress on people taking the course here. glad you were aware enough to notice this and able to get out of it without dumping the bike on top of yourself.

I bought a pair of bike boots when I started putting the serious miles in. I've got a straight black pair which I can where to work as they dont stand out too much. Cost me a tenner from a bike show and saved me some pain when I put the bike down last year.
The scenario you just had would suck on the trike, on the bike that could be so much worse. I guess that the difference between an accident and a learning experience.

Surgeon's Knot keeps laces tied, pulls loose when needed

I thought I had invented a new knot until I found out that it is called the Surgeon's Knot. It works great on the new, round synthetic laces. That and many more ways of lacing and knotting shoes and boots are discussed at Ian's Shoelace Site.

Sidi Vertigo boots look cool and offer great protection, of course, they also have casual-looking riding boots. Mine got dragged and ran over and they still look great.

Despite my skepticism, I have tied each of my two shoes in different "Ian Knots" to see which one works better.
