As a teen I lived in Hialeah, Florida and had a paper route. Because it was a suburban area at that time there were no paper routes that you could walk. As a result eveyone used either a bicycle or a motor scooter/motorcycle to deliver with. Most guys started on bicycles and moved up quickly. My route was 16 miles long and I delivered using a Vespa that was mine, and sometimes traded with a friend and used his Cushman Eagle.

Being chased by dogs was one of the most annoying and dangerous things that would happen to us. While fussing with the dog you could easily loose control and dump it over. Then you not only had to hope that you didn't get hurt, but you had to pick everything up while still keeping the dog at bay. We had to ride fairly slowly in order to get our papers out of the saddlebag and throw them accurately, so outrunning the dog wasn't always an option. It finally got to the point where we all carried wooden clubs, kind of like a billy club, that you could make out of a childs baseball bat. These clubs fit nicely in the saddlebags we used to hold the papers. You got to know where the problem dogs were on your route and one light tap somewhere near the snarling end usually discouraged the dog from further attacks. Looking back it seems a bit cruel. but after being bitten in the ankle a few times some defensive action was called for. Eventually I learned to always wear boots (engineer boots were the type of choice) and always carry my club. At some houses, the ones where the problem dogs were, I even carried my club when collecting from my customers.

The best way to scam the dog is to let it get really close to you and then take off fast. If you're already in motion, it's amazing how fast a dog will stride to keep up with you. But if you start off very slow, they're easily tricked when you take off fast, and they're unable to pick up the speed with you.

Again... I'm thinking that's what the post was about, but if it was only about being irritated with a dog owner not using a leash, then it should have gone into the "Soap Box" forum.

Happy posting!

Cheers,
Loonette
I've heard this tip alot. What I don't like about it is that I have visions of the dog running at me from the side, me going slowly and taking off at a high rate of speed just as the dog changes direction right under my tire. I can see the lady screaming to the cops now...

"Officer! My dog was running up to that biker, he was going really slow, and then he purposely sped up and ran over my dog!"

Eh, there wasn't much to do if the Husky had come at me. I was at a T intersection and was stopped. The only escape in that situation to outrun a dog would have been to haul onto the main drag, but there is traffic. I know about the changing speed option, that was taught @ my MSF course. Dogs pick an interception point and bolt at it. Change of speed changes the interception point and by that time the dog is left behind.

Heh, I wonder what people would think if they saw some biker dude running around with a club sticking out of his saddlebag. :P

Thanks for the tip & the website TechTMW. I'll check it out, been wanting to hook up w/ some local riders but haven't had much of an opportunity aside from waving at everyone on two wheels. :D

You lived in Hialeah...! small world, where do you live now? You should see Hialeah now, far from suburban.

Skel3tor1, I can see why you might have been apprehensive...the dogs in my neighborhood love to go after bikes...luckily so far it's only been Chiguaguas on leashes...lol

You know, you can stop faster when you *don't* lock up the rear tire ;)

If the dog turns around and apologizes, it's time to turn the bike around and head for home until the effects wear off

We lived on East 18th St. in Hialeah; don't remember the cross street, but it was a major street. I rode every day to school in Miami Springs and then on to my afternoon paper route after school. We moved to Ohio when I was in High School. My uncle stayed in Hialeah and he told me many years later that I would not regognize the place. When I lived there the population was about 3000 people. My uncle told me probably in the 70's that the population had grown to 100,000. He eventually moved to Dunellen, Florida.

We used to go to a swimming pool, either in Miami Springs or Hialeah called "The Venicetian" (spelling?) that was great. It was huge. It had the highest dive I have ever gone off of and even had caves you could swim in. Also used to roller skate at an outdoor rink somewhere near Hialeah; don't remember the name of it. There was an abandoned air field (Amelia Earhart Field I think) several miles north of Hialeah that we used to go to. There was a hole in the fence large enough to get through with your scooter or small motorcycle if someone else held the fence up for you. We'd sneak in and race each other on the runways. I haven't been back since we moved; I imagine everything is different now.

Since those days I spent 3 years in Germany (Army) and 12 years in Arizona. Back in Ohio again and I keep looking at property in Arizona.
