Still deciding on what bike to get :(
My brother has an SV650S, as seen directly above me.
If you like the sportier seating and truely believe your mind and body are inclined towards riding, an SV650(s) is a decent beginner bike, it seems, though it has a good amount of torque at lower RPMs.
No matter what, you have to be careful. Just choose that's right for you.

I RODE both bikes! The Suzuki SV650 and the Yamaha FZ6 and the Yamaha has the guts to wet the pants of any experienced rider, on the Yamaha FZ6 I have to lean forward with all my weight on top of the handlebars to keep the front wheel from coming up when I pull from a stop. The SV650 is b-o-r-i-n-g

Suzuki S40 (=Savage 650) rocks. It's FUN. Not a bad bike for a beginner/intermediate biker, as long as your respect the torque and the jump in HP.
My bike's an S50 / 805cc cruiser, but I love taking my wife's 650 for a ride every once in a while for a buzz around the neighborhood. It's a blast on the twisties.
