Think about your car driving test - its pretty similar. I took mine in WA and it was fairly extensive, but most people here in MA drive down one street, do a 3 point turn, then come back.

I guess all my licensing has come as I aged. I had to spend 2 weeks in behind the wheel before taking a drivers test that lasted half an hour.

My CDL test had parking lot exercises and then a 30 minute road test.

My motorcycle license took me 4 minutes on the DMV's range with a perfect score and a top speed of 15 mph in a straight line.
