That is 100% wrong.CNF2002 wrote:Its not just the government the ACLU is keeping check on, its corporations.
The ACLU does no such thing.
Never has. Never will.
Please stop spreading this false information.
The First Amendment prohibits U.S. government officals from making religious statements (or from taking actions) that would lead to a state-sanctioned religion.
The ACLU is opposed to goverment actions that violate this aspect of the First Amendment. Period. As I wrote in my previous post, the ACLU doesn't give a s**t about what messages private companies choose to use to market their wares in December.
Here's a fact: Many, not all, corporations have made a marketing decision to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" in order to appeal to as many of their customers as posssible, not just the Christian customers.
It was a boardroom decision to do this, made to fatten the company's bottom line. Or do you think the ACLU gets invited to corporations' board of directors meetings?
Where did you get this erroneous information about the ACLU, anyway? What Web site, publication, TV or radio show is spreading this false information?
Or, put another way, can you point me to some evidence that the ACLU is pressuring corporations in this way? Perhaps a letter the ACLU has sent to a company. Or a statement on the ACLU Web site pointing out how it was able to force a private company to change its policies in this way?
I will send $100 to a charity of your choice, in your name, if you can provide conclusive evidence that the ACLU has directly tried to force private corporations to abandon saying "Merry Christmas" and replace that phrase with a more generic holiday greeting.
P.S. Everyone does know, I hope, that the "memo" in the first post supposedly from the ACLU is someone's idea of a joke and is completely fabricated, right?
