They pretty much HAVE to by '08 when the new EPA regs come into effect. Carbs simply cannot be made to offer a balance between performance and emissions like FI systems can. Other manufacturers of air-cooled motors are gearing up for FI as well; Ural is testing an Italian system and have plans to implement it by '08.totalmotorcycle wrote:If Harley-Davidson does indeed make ALL their models fuel injection, it will be the only major motorcycle production manufacturer to achieve that for their entire lineup. They can do it, but will they?

I thought HD already used model specific exhaust systems? Not that it really matters when you figure 90% of HDs normally shed their stock exhaust shortly after leaving the showroom floor. Im pretty sure you will still be able to get screamin eagle pipes for em or at least aftermarket pipes.
Would be nice to see the FI carry over to the sportster line. It really is a pretty well sorted out FI system

The aftermarket world was slow to get systems designed and produced for the '06 Dyna lineup bevcause of the new O2 sensor location, amongst other changes. Harley has been keeping new developments REAL quiet the last couple years... even my dealer doesn't know what's in store for the '07 lineup and won't have a clue until HD announces them next week.jmillheiser wrote:Im pretty sure you will still be able to get screamin eagle pipes for em or at least aftermarket pipes.
I think this is done mostly because Harley wants to take a bite out of the aftermarket's share of the pie. There were quite a few OEM accessories available for my '06 Superglide but companies like Kuryakyn, Mustang and the like are just getting stuff out for them now.
As for shedding the stock exhaust systems, well, can't say as I'd blame anyone for doing so. They restrict the flow so much the TC88 motor sounds like a sewing machine. I put the 50-state legal SE mufflers on mine, they are nowhere near as loud as the ubiquitous Vance & Hines, Rhinehart, Thunderheader, Hard Krome, etc systems that most people seem to gravitate towards.

evolutionary harleys
I think what the Kawasaki guy was getting at is that Harley doesn't really do anything revolutionary...everything's evolutionary, just a little change at a time. The only thing they've done that can be thought of as revolutionary is their marketing. They've convince folks to buy a symbol for lots of money...even tattoo their heads with it.
Harley's smallest bike...the 883...would blow to pieces if it tried to run an rpm those cheaper japanese bikes can run. A 1450 cc engine with a shameful 60 hp for $20K? It's all in the marketing, not engineering.
I am a Harley owner, and love my bike--the look, the sound--I could stare at it for hours. But as far as being impressed with anything engineering? Not so much.

2007 Model Rumors...
Back in June 06 i ordered my 2007 Electraglide Ultra Classic. I knew this was my dream bike, and knew that Harley could only refine what they've already done great. The only thing my dealer confirmed was that my bike would have a "larger" engine and possibly the 6 speed tranny. All else should be seen this comming friday! Be safe!

New Models Harley Davidson
Highlights of the 2007 Harley-Davidson line include:
The new Twin Cam 96 engine, paired with the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission, delivers up to 17 percent more torque (varies by model family) than the Twin Cam 88 it replaces and incorporates a number of design changes to enhance performance and reliability. It will only be offered with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI). The 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission features quieter helical-cut gears in ratios optimized to match the torque curve of the Twin Cam 96. A sixth gear reduces engine rpm by 11 percent at highway speeds. New mufflers have been tuned to enhance the lower sound frequencies for a more commanding exhaust tone.
The VRSC family of liquid-cooled power-cruisers features two new models. The VRSCDX Night Rod Special offers menacing, blacked-out styling. The limited-edition VRSCX features the pavement-scorching power of a big-bore Revolution V-Twin engine with drag-bike styling and graphics that pay tribute to the NHRA champion Screamin' Eagle / Vance & Hines Pro Stock Motorcycle racing team.
The new FXSTC Softail Custom reprises the styling cues of the classic chopper, with a 200mm rear tire, king-and-queen seat, and Bobtail rear fender.
The limited-edition 50th Anniversary Sportster features special badging, a traditional peanut fuel tank, and other classic components to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1957 Sportster introduction.
The FLSTF Fat Boy is refreshed and reloaded for 2007, with new wheels and styling details, a new 200mm rear tire, and the performance of the Twin Cam 96/B engine and 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission.
The FXDC Dyna Super Glide Custom is redesigned to enhance its aesthetic appeal with additional chrome and custom features, including a new two-up, ribbed seat, Fat Bob fuel tank and a mini-pullback handlebar.
Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) will offer four exciting models for 2007: the Screamin' Eagle Road King, the Screamin' Eagle Ultra Classic Electra Glide, the Screamin' Eagle Softail Springer, and the Screamin' Eagle Dyna. Each is powered by a new high-performance Twin Cam 110 powertrain and features new accessories and fabulous new paint schemes.
The new Harley-Davidson Smart Security System, featuring new hands-free fob and auto arming/disarming, is an available factory-installed option for all Harley-Davidson models.
Harley-Davidson will offer 17 new color combinations for 2007.
