Oh, alright I wasn't sure what a normal price on a used 250 would be. Once again I am a newb and getting to know the ropes

gunbait, if your going after the sound, remember you can easily add an aftermarket exhaust onto a motorcycle and completely change it's sound. If you like that high pitched Vroooooom, Vroooooom high speed RPM noise than it is an inline 4 you want, if you like the low basey Booom Booom Booom sound, then you can go with a inline twin or a V-twin/L-Twin.

There definately are some good bikes out there to start on. You'll have to get to a dealship and sit on a few and see what you like. Bike's new riders have started on vary. Tortus made a great point, you think you want something but once you start riding anything your view changes to a more accurate list of what you want or like. After your MSF course you'll know even better if it's a sportbike, standard, cruiser or dual-sport you'll crave.

My MSF course was on a dual-sport, my first bike a cruiser, then 4 standards, now a dual-sport. haha.

AS FOR STARTERS, YOU SHOULD PROBABLY BUY A MOTORCYCLE FROM CRAIGSLIST THAT IS SOME WHAT CHEAP WITH ABOUT 500CC. SOMETHING LIKE A GSX 500. RIDE IN AN OPEN AREA , LIKE FOR INSTANTS, A PARKING LOT. BUT A GOOD WAY TO START OFF WOULD BE TO LEARN HOW TO SHIFT ON AN ATV( QUAD ). AFTER THAT IT SHOULD ALL BE THE SAME FOR A BIGGER BIKE. NOT TOO BIG THOUGH, JUST UPGRADE TO LIKE A 600CC MOTORCYCLE. HARDEST PARTS ABOUT RIDING THAT TAKES SOME GETTING USE TOO WOULD BE TURNING, AND TAKE OFF. DONT HISATATE TO UPGRADE. ON A BIGGER MOTORCYCLE YOU'DE HAVE TO GET USED TO THE THROTTLE. IT TENDS TO BE A LITTLE MORE TORQUEY. GOOD LUCK ,& DON'T FORGET TO WEAR A HELMET.

I know I should really start off slow (with that 250cc many people have recommended).

I'm riding a 23 year old 250 because it tops out at 80mph. The 500 I was on immediately before that topped out somewhere over the ton mark.

Slow is a relative value.
