i like how you think. once you realize every reason not to do something you really want to do is just an excuse that can be overcome, its easy to do.
life is short and you only get one, so do something interesting.
thats what i always say anyway.

I'm going to be entirely practical, and downright boring I suppose. I had wanted a bike of some kind, off and on for about 25 years. No real burning desire or anything, but I had thought about it to the point of looking a few times.
Then last year, when gas prices started to creap toward $3.00 a gal, or more, and my wife and I realized we needed another vehicle, we started to look around for an inexpensive second car. We needed something that got really good gas mileage, because I have a 156 mile round trip to work every day.
We quickly realized that we couldn't find a car we could afford, that got anywhere near the mileage we wanted. Actaully we couldn't afford any car.
For some reason I remembered something about a Honda Silverwing scooter she and I had looked at a year or two before, so I suggested getting one of those. She laughed her head off. How much do they cost? I had no idea.
So we stopped at the local Honda/Yamaha dealer and looked for a Silverwing, but they didn't have one. They did have a Yamaha Majesty. It seemed to fill the bill in every way, except (1) It wasn't a car, and (2) I didn't know how to ride a motorcycle. Any motorcycle.
So naturally we bought it, and got a friend to bring it home on his pickup truck. While waiting for the delivery date, I did some research and found out about the safety gear and such, so I had a helmet, a "biker" jacket, steel toed boots, and gloves and such.
That was 15,000 miles ago. It's been a hoot. I've ridden in rain, snow (light snow, once when the weatherman got fooled), heat and cold. It's been a blast.
A few weeks ago, I asked my wife, "You know what?" What? She answered. I replied "I really LIKE riding a motorcycle." She laughed and said "You're just figureing that out? I knew that the first day you rode it to the end of the cul-de-sac and came back with your face about to split. I knew that when you crashed that time, and got up and slapped the bike back into shape, rode it home and duct taped the body damage together and rode it to work the next night. I knew it the night you left here with a thunderstorm on the way, and it rained like a cow ........ on a flat rock that night. Yea. You like to ride a motorcycle."
