Thanks. Yeah I think your dad went in during a simpler time before all this high tech gadgetry and increase in public etiquette and laws. So he probably went in and got refreshed as time went on.

NYC is very strict in terms of education and physical requirements. A requirement of 60 college credits, an eye exam, aptitude test, physical before being accepted to the academy. The wait time for results are in months. In the end NYPD get paid pretty low compared to other states.

So far this is what I am expected to do for California:

Written exam, once that's graded and it's acceptable then I would move on to a physical exam: 1 mile run in 10 minutes, Agility with a 20 sec. completion time, dragging an unconscious body for a given length in a matter of seconds, then scaling a wall in 15 - 20 seconds tops. Then there would be an Oral exam. No details given. Pass all 3 then move on to interview then polygraph. Then comes the academy and 5 months of training....

Heh, I've had that happen before. Sign up for a job and months later get a response only to have forgotten what the heck I went in and applied for.

Here's hoping you get the job/ jobs (wouldn't hurt to have the mystery job for kicks) and then more toys for the bike.

I see, that's similar to what he did (and what they still do up here I believe). I thought it sounded like you already got into academy, but then could get the ax after any exercise/task!

I actually didn't apply for a job there, not a specific one. Just dropped off a cover letter and resume because I like the company .

Best of luck with the NYPD. I can only imagine how hard it is to be a police officer in the USA. A good caring police officer is worth their weight in gold. Kudos to those who do it day in and day out.

Sorry, this is for Santa Barbara, CA PD. Thanks though. The NYPD, which I'm used to as I live here, is very strict in comparison and the waiting time for results is extremely long compared to the California department I'm doing but as I don't live in California I need an open ended plane ticket because I'm not given details on when I can leave if I can leave should I pass the exams.

Yeah, I'm not concerned with this part of the exam. It's too easy (at least on paper) compared to the rigors I've been put through in the Shaolin Temple for martial arts. The one thing that may be bothersome is the heat. It's very warm in lower California so here's hoping it'll be a high of 70° F instead of the usual 85 - 90° in mid April.

PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAMINATION

TEST #1 1 Mile Run
This test is used as a gauge of your readiness for the more rigorous academy fitness standards. You have 10 minutes to complete the run.

TEST #2 Agility Run
This test simulates a short distance foot pursuit and requires frequent changes in direction while running as fast as possible.
(Distance: 99 yards) To pass, time must be 33.5 seconds or less.

TEST #3 Body Drag
This test simulates dragging a physically incapacitated person to safety.
(Distance: 32 feet) To pass, time must be 20 seconds or less.

TEST #4 Solid Fence Climb
This test measures your ability to run and scale a six (6) foot solid fence in as short a time as possible. (Distance: 30 yards) To pass, time must be 19.1 seconds or less.

I could do this eyes closed. The fence part I will pull a "Jackie Chan" and scale it in less than 5 seconds (if the test is like what's printed).

I just wasn't given any pamphlets on the written exam so I don't know what to study for. Plus no details on the Oral exam and I'm not too thrilled about the polygraph...

Here in NYC the testing process is drawn out and a lot of applicants but I live here so I have a place to stay. Over there it's done over a matter days - weeks but if I succeed then the academy starts very quickly but I don't live there... at least not yet anyway.

I was just planning on renting a car and sleeping in it...

I would advise against the car idea... You want to be at your best for the testing, and no one is in their best sleeping in a car for a week!

Polygraph is ridiculous, antiquated technology, it is surprising how slow departments have been to abandon them.

All I know of is... Renton Motorcycle (Renton), Eagle Leather (Tacoma), and Hinshaws (Auburn).

I looked up Issaquah and noticed it is in a nice area for riding, not even that far from my current residence. I can head down the #97 enjoy the scenery and head across the #90 right to Seattle... probably a nice day ride for me, but... ahem... Seattle is um... 25kms from Issaquah. If you cant find a decent bike dealer with a selection of gear in Seattle then you aint lookin very hard.

Since I have a new gig, providing my school-of-hard-knocks knowledge in the fast paced world of Ural Sidecars and Harley-Davidson flat-heads (well, it's April Fools ya know) I have another obstacle taken down on my path towards doing some serious off-road riding.

2-cents of advice on your job search JVRR ---> Think/dream/envision a real good fun goal and then remind yourself how much steady income (and other things) will help you to achieve that goal. Start to use some creativity to find that dream, that job, each step. Every time you take an ACTION towards that dream you will find the world just sort of guides you to the right place... dont fight it, just ask questions along the way and keep following your nose like a hound dog.

First step - dream a little and get yourself enthused/happy/motivated on how fun it will be to have that dream become reality -- then apply all of your person to making that dream happen. I find it makes everything easier, and luck just happens when you follow your dreams, small or big... things will happen.

It sounds like JC Viper is doing just that -- his goal is BEING a police officer, not just getting a job as a police officer -- it just happens the two are more closely intertwined in his case. Since New York has obstacles he has become totally open to other options, and they are happening...
