new biker - several questions

#1 Unread post by DirtyD86 »

hey yall im a 19 year old guy looking to buy a bike. my license was recently suspended for speeding so im going to get my class m sometime soon. ive got a few questions, any help is certainly appreciated:

- my class D license was suspended for speeding, will this have any effect on me getting a class M? will i have to do anything differently than someone who has their regular license?

- i was looking at a kawasaki eliminator 125 for my first bike. its affordable, looks nice, and ive heard from people with experience that it would be a perfect bike for a new rider. what do yall think?
[edit] i just saw how small of a bike this is... i dont think id fit. suggest me some cruisers that would be good for someone who is 6'5". [/edit]

- i got an insurance quote for the eliminator 125, it said my payments would be roughly 50 a month for minimum coverage with 3 tickets on my record. would this be the ballpark figure for most any bike in this performance range? obviously im not going to go buy a haybusa for my first bike, but would something like that be a hell of a lot more to insure?

- at 6'5" im a fairly tall guy, would my height make a certain type of bike more comfortable than another? ive yet to test any of the bikes im interested in, so before i do so, is there anything i should know in regards to my height and riding ?

i really do appreciate any advice yall can give me, im pretty pysched about the whole thing so its hard to not rush right out and buy one. im TRYING to research and learn my stuff, before i run off and buy the wrong bike. any other advice youd like to give would be appreciated as well.
thanks
-dusty

Welcome to the forums.

Not real sure about the licenceing. Thats going to be a state by state type affair. You'll have to to talk to you're DMV or MVD or whatever they call it there. Here in New Mexico I belive that if you're older than 16 your Moto licence is tied to your cage licence as a "motorcycle endorcement" and if one is suspended both go. This could be different wherever you are.

A 125 sounds like a good starter. You're going to want to sit on it to see how it fits before you really decide.

Insurance should be roughly the same for the bikes in the same size/class. Yes a haybusa is going to be a whole hellaval lot more expensive to insure than a eliminator 125.

Again, at 6'5 you are pretty tall. You're going to want to sit on some bikes to find the right fit.
To ensure perfect aim, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

I highly doubt an Eliminator is going to go over well with your body. It's small and 125cc's is pretty weak (although if you're a pencil at 6'5 and 130lbs it might be a different story). I don't think you'd be able to hit highway speeds on it.

For a cruiser for someone your size I'd go with something like a Kawasaki Vulcan 500 or Honda Shadow 600.

Like Donkey said, it's a state thing. In Jersey, the "M" is an endorsement to your license. If your license is suspended, it's suspended. Adding an endorsement to a suspended license isn't going to lift the suspension.

I gotta say if you've had your license suspended for speeding you aren't the kind of person I'd want to see on a bike.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

What better reason to get an Eliminator 125? It's incapable of breaking any known speed limit.

I think you have a snowballs chance in hell of getting licensed. And I'm sure if you were totallt truthful with your insurance company about your driving record, it would be even tougher to get insured. I guarantee you'd have no chance here in CA. Sounds like you got a problem with speed and obeying limits. I think you'd be best on a bicycle personally. Sorry.
