...naked?

For instance why is the Nighthawk in the cruisers section of the Honda website while the 919 and 599 are in the sport section?

Help me out... I'm a clueless n00b.

Standard refers to the style of bike in between a cruiser and a sport bike. You don't have to lean forward to reach the handlebars. You just sit up straight. A naked bike refers to one with little or no fairing, that is, there is not much plastic around the engine (i.e. the engine is exposed) aka: streetfighter.

GS500F and GS500E is an example of a standard (that's made to look like a sportbike) and a naked.

The F is the fairinged version I believe. I always get the two mixed up so just look at them both.

I believe it can be a standard and naked at the same time. Don't see why it'd be one or the other since standard is a position of the body and naked is aesthetics but I've been wrong before.

Standard is the position of seating i do believe.

Fairings - Devices mounted at the front of a motorcycle to protect the rider from the elements. These range from simple Plexiglas shields mounted to the handlebars, to complex encompassing body panels that enshroud the entire front half of the bike.

Naked bikes - Bikes without any type of fairing.

A good example is the Suzuki Bandit. It has both fairinged or naked models.

Don't forget that the manufacturer's clasification of bikes is partly based on their sales program for the country involved.

The Nighthawk is in a class called cruiser/standard on the US Honda site and the 599/919 are in the Sport class.

The 599/919 aka Hornets in the UK are in a class called Traditional on the UK Honda site.

Calling a bike traditional in the US probably wouldn't sell a pedal bike. Wrong image for our image conscience market.

Nakeds are mostly standards. Is a Speedtriple (which is naked) a standard or a sportsbike? My bike is a standard and I guess retro-naked. I guess the FZ6 and FZ1 are standard naked. I know ... name a naked that is not a standard. Like a Sportster is a standard, but not a naked. I would not call a Sportster a cruiser; it is one of the earliest iterations of the modern standard. The Triumph Scrambler (grand child of the TR6 of old) is an excellent example of a standard.
