Possible to keep a bike outside?

#1 Unread post by p4tz »

I live in an apartment and don't have any indoor parking. Would it be possible to leave the bike outside, or will the elements take their toll?

elements will take their toll, but its not to bad useally, depends on where ya live and what kinda elements ya got. If you keep it outside make sure its secured to something and try to cover it.

I'm not an expert on this so I'm just going off what I saw, but in NY most people just used bike covers. I lived in the city so few ppl had garages either. Same here in FL and it rains a lot so I "think" a cover should be sufficient. I'd like feedback as well as I will be in same boat soon.

I'm in the same situation. I just bought a cover for the bike and toss it on every evening. No harm from the elements so far.

Two bikes. Both kept outside. Covered and locked when I (or Loonette) are not riding. If your option is keep the bike outside or not have a bike, I'd go for the keeping it outside. It will be harder on a bike than if it could be kept in a garage. But it will be much fun to ride the bike than not have one.

Sorry for the dumb question (complete beginner here), but when you say locked, do you mean sort of chained to an object or do you use something that locks the wheels?

it can be either one or both.

but if theives really want to steal your bike, then they can do it no matter how much you lock it.

my bike is garage kept but i didn't buy any locks for when i park outside. i only made it a priority to get full coverage insurance.

so if you buy a really nice bike, make sure to have full coverage insurance on it.

well you can chain them to say a beam or support rod, but i used a kyrptonite lock that was cemeted to my floor that i chained the frame of the bike to. There are also locks that simply lock the wheels from moving.

Thanks for the link. I looked at some of the websites in that thread, and I think I'll have to go with a device that locks the wheels from moving. I don't think my apartment complex would be too thrilled if I started drilling holes in the concrete outside to put in the Kryptonite system

I'll definitely be getting full coverage insurance as well. I have a friend that recently had his bike stolen and only had liability coverage. Instead of learning the hard way, I think I'll learn from his mistake.
