Determining certain noise is normal

#1 Post by TheImp »

My bike (vulcan 500) makes a sort of buzzing noise when I accelerate as if this noise comes from the cables or something like perhaps the throttle cable, not sure. its kind of like a vibration, but I don't feel it and I don't hear it with my helmet on. I was just wondering if this is normal and if so what is causing this? If it's not normal, what should I do to fix it?

I have the same bike but from 2001. I started hearing a buzzing sound at around 16,000 miles. At first I might thought it would be the windshield then I heard that steering head bearings might be the culprit or the speedo housing could be loose.

I don't anything else so I hope this might help there.

yeah it can't be a normal noise. I'll look into the speedo housing today and perhaps check some other bolts. If I sit at idle and blip the throttle I get the noise, so it's clearly dependent on the engine speed which in itself creates more vibration. So my main thing to check will be the speedo housing, cables. Anything else anyone think might also be loose? I guess tightening the standard critical bolts wouldn't hurt either.
