Oy...I'm alive!

So I'm riding to work this morning, slow traffic, when I decide I want to be in the middle lane (I'm in the right hand lane where traffic is merging from a ramp).

So I put on my blinker and look behind me. Red car, with about a full car lengths space between us (mind you, we are at 20mph here). So I begin my lane change.

As soon as I do, I see in my mirror this woman flooring it! My speed is up and if I go back into my lane I might hit the car in front, so I gun it to avoid her.

At that point, I'm thanking she didn't hit me. I wonder what goes through these people's minds? I'm sitting there shaking my head...grumbling about the mefirsts (oh, that is such a good catchphrase).

But little do I realize, this is not over! Looking in my rear, I now see the woman tailgating me. Then, she pulls back a little, slams on the gas, and almost hits me from behind! Well, she does this about 3 times! At this point I'm convinced she just murdered her 6 children in a bathtub somewhere, so my added death will only help her insanity plea so she can walk free.

Fortunately, the lanes around us had cleared substantially, I assume everyone was getting the heck away from us. So I pulled back into my previous lane, she gunned passed me, and I returned to the middle lane (the SUV behind her did not gas it when I attempted a lane change - what a nice fellow).

Anyway, thats my story for today

people literally turn into animals when they get behind a wheel, especially when they're on thier daily commute. I've seen what you described so many times its not even funny. I moved into the city from the suburbs recently, and I find that kind of thing a lot less here acctually, mostly because Im not traveling on the highways.

Some people just can't stand to give up that spot on the road. God forbid someone get in front of them.

I have this happen at least three out of five days a week while commuting, albeit not on my bike. Once a few weeks ago with my family in our mini-van, I'm merging onto the highway, this lady in the right hand lane on the highway starts to speed up so I can't merge in front of her. No problem, I start to slow down, then she slows down, so I speed up, so she speeds up. Finally after I ran out of ramp and was in the emergency lane she quit driving right next to me and I managed to get on the highway. Freaking a$$clowns.

Yes this happens to me all the time in my cage, but I guess it feels a little more personal when on the bike. They aren't just trying to hit the fat-butted SUV that just merged into their lane (with me behind the wheel hehe), they are trying to hit ME, and run me over. Its like those people who, if they are at a stoplight that turns green and someone is still walking across the crosswalk in front of them, they will lurch forward and pretend they are going to hit them.

It boggles my mind.

That's an accurate observation and one I see every day on the way to work. There's a Tim Horton's (a Canadian coffee/doughnut chain for those of you who don't know) about 100m before the entrance to the factory. The last three blocks prior to Tim's is a continuous scene of total automotive anarchy, especially in the mornings. It's a winner-takes-all race to see who gets to the front of the drive-through line; I call it the "Timmies 500". Basically, it's four lanes of traffic (two lanes each way) trying to overtake each other and be the first in line for a large double-double and bagel w/cream cheese. I have lost count of how many times some total f***ing moron has gunned it and cut RIGHT in front of me - regardless of which direction they're approaching from - just to get in the lot ahead of me. What these Darwinian rewind buttons fail to realise is that... I'm on a bike. I can't go to the drive-through window because I have no place to carry a coffee and a bagel. I'm not even in the race, I'm just trying to make it to work in one piece.

glad you are okay....I get the same treatment...on a regular basis. I commute to work almost everyday on my 250cc scooter. Most of the time..I think the cagers can't stand the idea of a scooter able to go as fast as them.

Last year on my way home. Came up to a stop light. The light turned green...and this guy next to me made his tires bark off the line. Didn't think much of it. It seemed like we hit every light. Well he did it at every light until I changed lanes to make a left turn. When the light turned green...he started driving like a lil' ole lady off the line this time. I laughed my head off.

Also last year on my way home...maybe a pattern? This cager to my left on a three lane road....was having a very animated conversation with his passenger...did not bother to look or signal that he was going to change lanes...right into my path...as I am right next to the passenger door....he got about half way into my lane before he realized what he was doing. Got up to the stop light...I looked at him...all he could do was look at me with that deer in the headlights look...then he flipped me the bird.

Cagers...not a motorcyclists best friend.

I'm conisidering carrying a small number of large rocks in my tank bag, if someone tries what that lady did to me, I just reach in, pick one up, and release it at shoulder height. With luck it won't hit her.

Around here you're only responsible for damage that results from a piece of your vehicle coming loose. I'd just say my tire must have kicked it up and get away scotch free. She shouldn't have been following that close anyways :P
