First motorcycle accident

#1 Post by camthepyro » Thu May 04, 2006 1:11 pm

So I got in my first motorcycle accident today, and I have to say, it was not fun. Obviously I'm ok, since I'm typing this. Just a few scratches and bruises, and I think a sprained ankle, I didn't even got to the hospital.

Basically a guy was waiting to turn left, and started going, because he didin't see my in the right lane, because there was another car blocking his view or something. I saw him, and thought he saw me, so I kept going, as soon as I went past the car that was stopped and blocking the view, I saw he was going. I was going maybe 35 at this point, so I slammed on my brakes, he slammed on his and stopped, I was going fast enough that I couldn't completely stop, and hit him at maybe 15-20 mph. I rolled over the hood, an landed on my hands and knees, and had the presence of mind to crawl off the road. Someone called the police, and they showed up, and ended up charging the guy with failure to yield. The bike was actually not too bad, the front fender bent down, taking a gouge out of the tire, and the left turn signals got bent, and the left side body work cracked. But besides that it was pretty much ok. It was still running, so I ended up taking off the front fender and riding it the few miles home. Now I just want to lay in bed, because I'm all bruised, and can't put weight non my left leg.

Anyway, so the good thing is, it was his fault, so his insurance will cover eveything, and I should be able to actually get some stuff fixed that was messed up even before the accident.

Glad you're not too banged up. You might want to get checked out by a doctor to make sure there aren't any problems that won't come up for another few days or so.

Also be prepared to be very sore. :(

Glad you're OK man. But I'm going to harsh on you *a little*, mainly so you'll learn from this.

You're a new rider, and you made a total n00b assumption. You assumed that the guy in the cage saw you. Not only that, you assumed it in the worst possible situation, i.e. cage preparing to turn left into your right of way where you KNEW that his visibility of you might have been blocked.

NEVER assume that the cage sees you. YOU ARE TOTALLY INVISIBLE. You have to be proactive, and always prepared that the cage doesn't see you and will pull in front of you.

When you're approaching any intersection with cages preparing to go left, slow WAY the heck down, cover that brake, be prepared for the worst. Same goes for vehicles preparing to turn right into your lane.

I know I sound like a broken record, but YOU ARE TOTALLY INVISIBLE.

That said, hope you heal up quickly and your bike gets fixed soon.

And DO go see a doctor.

Cheers.

+1 for what MontyCarlo said

Additionally, just so you know, I don't know what time of day your incident occurred, but for future reference, if you're riding and the sun is at your back, whereas your own shadow is 'in front' of you...the 'longer' your shadow is, the more INVISIBLE you are to motorists facing you. Slow way way down in those intersections. You've got to keep a running dialogue in your head...call it "worst case scenario"... anticipate!

Glad you're not banged up too bad dude...other than that, definitely take the advice to see a doc for any possible latent effects. Get your bike fixed and get back on it.

and thought he saw me,
I'm sure you already know but that's where you messed up. Never assume.

Ride like you're invisible, even if the person acknowledges you and waves you through, it could be the guy behind you he's looking at.

Anyways glad you're alright and that the guy who caused the accident got the citation for once adn didn't get off with "I didn't see him"
Have fun on the open /¦\

See a doctor! You may feel okay now, but if it becomes necessary to retain an attorney later on the lack of a doctor's report will hurt your case.

Also, the bike may feel fine, but it's highly likely you bent the front forks. Have a closer look in the morning and look for fractures and bends.
