Helmet for Me, Helmet for You

I'm looking to buy a new helmet because my HJC is a little to big ( i was inexperienced when i bought it). I was just wondering who makes great helmets for great prices. I would appreciate any direction, and also whats all this talk I hear about snell actually being to hard of a helmet??? is there any merit to this... thanks ... later

I'm very happy with my Scorpion helmet. When I purchaced it I didn't look at prices, style, color. I just tried them all on different sizes/makes and all. The helmet that fit me the best turned out to be one of the more inexpensive makes but it is both DOT and SNELL certified so I'm not weary of its protection. The helmet that fits you best will infact provide the best protection. Read the sticky in the new bikers forum on helmets.

I have the Shoei RF1000. Its my first helmet and can't compare it to any prior. I am going to purchase an Arai cuz I have heard such good things about them in relation to freeway driving but they are a little more pricey.

I wear an Icon Mainframe and I like it a lot as far as comfort goes. Its DOT and Snell certified and it was only 230 bucks...sounds like a lot but Arai's and Shoei's can be as much as a used bike. The only problem I have with it is that it fogs up if its cold out...I need to get some of that anti fog spray. Cracking the visor open a little takes care of this problem too. Oh, and I wear glasses and they fit inside nicely without crushing them against my head. It is fairly quiet as well.

I have an Arai, I love it.

As for the June 2005 Motorcyclist article regarding the snell rating being too hard... Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think the article was irresponsible. Although it made good points regarding the testing of helmets and the transferance of energy to the head, too many people are throwing away good helmets for helmets of lesser quality.
It may be true that the Snell standards are too "hard" but at least Snell helmets are tested. D.O.T. only helmets are not tested by anyone but the manufacturer, and that testing is on an honor system. D.O.T pays an independant lab to test a portion of helemts annually, but only a small percentage of the helmets that are available. Check the D.O.T. website for each years list of helmets that pass or fail.

Generaaly speaking when you pay more money for a helmet you are paying for upgraded features such as reduced weight, improved aerodynamics and venting.

You have to decide for yourself... what are the features that are most important to you, and how much your head is worth. Spend accordingly.

Wrong. Flat out wrong. You're helmets quality is not necessarily relative to price. As I said before, and I believe this line is directly from the sticky in the new bikers forum, "The helmet that fits you the best will provide the best protection." I 110% agree with this statement. You cannot truthfully say or tell anyone that say an Arai (expensive) which fits horribly will provide as best protection as a best fitting HJC (more inexpensive).

Get a DOT, Snell certified helmet that fits YOU the best. Don't look at prices, don't look at styles, don't look at brands. Go into some stores and try them on. Find the one that fits you best. Out of the ones that fit you the best make sure they are in fact DOT, Snell. Price should in my opinion never be a factor in deciding you're helmet. Period.
