EDMONTON -- A blood-smeared helmet was lying in the middle of a west end intersection Sunday morning after a young motorcyclist collided with a car.

Police said the 21-year-old male driver of the yellow, purple and white Suzuki sport bike was bleeding profusely from the head when emergency crews arrived on-scene around 10:50 a.m. He was taken to the University of Alberta hospital with severe head injuries.

"He is in very, very critical condition at this time," said Sgt. Gary Lamont at the intersection of 95th Avenue and 163rd Street.

A line of blood trickled from a larger pool as investigators shut down the intersection for about four hours.

"It appears that the vehicle turned left in front of his path. He braked, the bike went down, but he still struck the vehicle," said Lamont. "Indications are that the lights were green."

Lamont said there are conflicting reports of the speed of the motorcycle.

The front end of the eastbound motorcycle was crushed and debris, including a pair of black loafers, was scattered throughout the intersection. The red Plymouth Mercury, which was turning left southbound onto 163rd Street, had a large dent on the rear passenger side.

Lamont said two people were inside the car. A young girl and an older female driver, who was visibly shaken, were escorted to another car by a woman.

"Just like metal hitting metal, like a bang," said Ann Curry, of the sound. "He just went flying in the air. He landed on the ground, face down. When they turned him over, his face was all bloody."

Currie ran into the church looking for a doctor, but by that point paramedics had already arrived.

Theresa Kanobel, 72, said the shattered motorcycle looked like one that sped by her and her husband's car on 95th Avenue on their way to church. Kanobel added that the motorcycle she saw had been weaving between cars at high speeds, which was confirmed by several other churchgoers.

Ugh, First motorcycle fatality I've seen this year around Edmonton, this is way to soon for it to be starting.

I wonder what he was wearing though.

His face was messed up indicating not a fullface, or not a buckled one, and a pair of loafers? Cover up just case. Of course with the weather up here, you'ld be crazy not to cover up, chance of snow tonight. "fudge"!
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Those cars are older (don't know cars enuf to tell you a year tho) and were made of tougher metal than cars these days so that poor guy had to have hit it at quite the speed to make a "large dent" in the door.

He isn't dead, and hopefully won't be anytime soon...

Sad to hear. Full faced helmets are the way to go!
"Just like metal hitting metal, like a bang," said Ann Curry, of the sound.
Thanks, Ann. And I thought car crashes made a squishy sound.
