My Roketa Bali 250 will smoke any 600cc motorcycle out there.. You better watch yourselves, because you will be eating dust for lunch.. lol.. I am joking you all. No, my first scooter was a 49cc scooter and after 15 years of riding 49cc, I went to a 250cc scoot.. My next step is either a 250cc motorcycle or a 400cc Yamaha Majesty.. A lot of people loose their lives, by thinking they can just go to a 600cc bike without any real experience. A 400cc scooter will do approximently 110 mph.. That is fast for twist and go.. lol

Actually the vast majority of the beginners being picked off the pavement are not kids on 600s but mid life crisis males 50+ years of age with no skills whatsoever that go out and buy Harleys and promptly crash them.BRUMBEAR wrote:I have not read all the posts here but I can only say I am tired seeing kids get picked up off the pavement and adults who bought these machines because they were only 600's!!!! .

Sadly enough that's true. It's a pretty good split here though. We have a ton of military, so we have the "Holy crap I have money from my sign on bonus, I just got trained to think I'm invincible, and I'm on my own for the first time, so I'm gonna buy a crotch rocket." We also have a ton of retired military, so we have a ton of the "Holy crap my kids are gone, I've got disposable income, and I've always wanted a motorcycle but I could never have one before, so I'm gonna go be a weekend warrior with my buddies!".

I won't disagree with this as I have seen my fair share of both!!! The older guys here NJ seem to favor Harley or Ducati as they tend to have much more disposable income I'll wager, but either way I am afraid you are very spot on!!
there aint nothin like it

I am a noob who inherited a very small cc motorcycle. I prefer vintage Japanese motorcycles. I am in the market for an upgrade and have been consider in a 1981 suzuki GS1000g. Any opinions? Comment?Anything?

Hello Brandon and welcome to the forum. I looked in the dictionary under Vintage Japanese Motorcycle and there was a picture of a 72 Honda CL100. I would limit myself to a 50bhp/500lb bike for your first bike. Intro yourself and show a picture of that sweet cl100.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

Brandon,
Welcome to Total Motorcycle.
One motorcycle you might be interested in owning is a Yamaha's 2015 SR400. This is a very cool Japanese retro bike for those that are longing for a rock solid dependable UJM.
Safe Travels,
Richard

Hi Brandon,
As Johnj and Hanson suggested, I'd go for something smaller than the 1100 as your first bike. I'm a real fan of Vintage bikes and the 1981 Suzuki's were not great (well the engines were, but the electrics were horrible) even back in the day. I owned a GS550 myself and that was more wrench than ride let me tell you! As Hanson suggested, the new Yamaha 400 is awesome, and even has a kick start!
If you are REALLY, really, really, stuck on wrenching in the garage on a 25+ year old bike, try a Honda or Kawasaki of that era, best you can do for reliability.

A new rider that buys a 600 supersport will develop more slowly than a rider that gets a "more forgiving" motorcycle.

600 sportbike is actually a very forgiving motorcyle. It is far more forgiving that many of the bikes that these so called experts are suggesting.NORTY wrote:A new rider that buys a 600 supersport will develop more slowly than a rider that gets a "more forgiving" motorcycle.

Learning clutch control on these bikes with its smooth and super predictable clutch is very easy.
I am willing to bet that the majority of the people posting on this thread have never even ridden a 600 sportbike.
