When is it time for new shocks?

Hey, folks. Thanks as always.
My Clymer's manual for my '81 CX500 shows how easy it is to change the shocks (also states that the shocks for my bike can not be maintained, only changed when they are done). But it doesn't give any info on how to determine if new shocks are needed.
I think I still have the factory shocks, now in their 25th year. Is that age alone enough to make it worth replacing them?
I think because of my lack of experience on any other bikes that I can't decide if they are done for or not. I have tried the different tension settings on them, but haven't been able to tell if any setting is giving a better ride than any other (softer vs. harder). After rides of two hours or so, I do have some aching in my lower back. Would this be related to worn out shocks?
If I replace them, is this a generic enough part for an early '80s cruiser than I can buy any brand, or will I go wrong with some brands and right with others? I found this set on JCWhitney for $80. Any cautions against them?
Thanks,
