Part of the fun of going out is getting lost.
Just have a map/ cellphone handy. I know it's not as far as you want to go, but when I lived in PA years ago, I used to like to ride down to Cape May with friends. It's been too long for me to remember roads tho ...

I am a total newbie to riding, but I would think half the fun would be the journey. Why not just wing it? Sure look at a map, but do some exploring, too. You have to be extra careful on unfamiliar roads, but you may find some really good scenary.

Re: roads and maps
I can give you some insight to roads in Conn & RI. If you are going to RI you have to go thru Conn first. The most direct route is I-95 in Conn. I do not recommend driving on I-95 especially on a holiday weekend. It will be jam packed with people coming back from the Cape (among other places east)jaydodds wrote:im planning a day trip from nj on monday. was thinking abut going down to dc, or up to ri. anyone have any suggestions? also, when looking at a map, what non interestate roads do i want to consider or stay away from.
If you really want to go to RI choose a non-holiday weekend.
Alternatively, you should consider Conn a worthwhile destination instead.
Look at a map for Litchfield county Conn (northwestern part of state) There are some beautiful areas up there and traffic should be lite.
If you do decide to go north to Conn avoid the George Washington bridge in NYC at all costs. Take the Tappan Zee bridge instead. This will add approx 20 miles to your trip, but it's well worth it.
