Moderators/webmasters pleaes read: TMW chat room

#1 Unread post by earwig »

Has there been any talk of creating a chat room for TMW right here on the site? DieMonkeys has created an irc chat room but I think most people are too lazy to want to learn irc or download it etc and figure out how to use it only to find 2 people there idle. There are lots of nice/easy to configure Java applets that can be put on this site so the members can shoot the shiat...

it'd be easy to get a client applet going but getting a chat server process itself running might not be so easy unless a person has access to their server beyond the typical web admin interface. Perhaps the site owner can contact the hosting service, they may already have an out-of-box solution.

Sounds like a good idea. A lot of people don't like to use the seperate chat programs, but one internal to the site would get a lot of use.

I know I'm fairly new, but that's my 2 cents...

Couldn't they just get an applet that automatically connects to the room I created? I'd happily relinquish the reigns to the mods (if they knew what they were doing). And they wouldn't have to worry about setting up a chat server.

Yeah, that is a good idea and it can be done I believe. I haven't done it myself that way but I do not see any obstacle to doing it.

An applet could connect to an irc server, so no sever software would be required. Maybe someone should set up a poll to see how many people would use it... I am too lazy :)

There WAS a chat room - no one used it. I've tried the IRC channel, but i'm as few hours ahead of most of you guys so it's usually empty.

if you guys want, i can start a chat room somewhere offsite but dedicated to this forum...either with php or java. or if admin lets, i can do it right here in TMW....it'd be something like:

totalmotorcycle.com/chat

it takes less than 5 minutes to setup.

P.S. i don't think that many people would go on it.

what would we chat about? everyhting we talk about is here on the forums because for the most part none of us have enough to say about any one topic to have a whole conversation. this is how i immagine it-

[HandsomeRyan] **enters chat**

[DucatiHottie] Hey Handsome, A/S/L?

[HandsomeRyan] 21/M/TN,USA

[DucatiHottie] OoOooOo.. I'm 19/F/TX. I'm so lonely tonight, my b/f and i just broke up

[HandsomeRyan] im sorry, i know breakups suck.

[DucatiHottie] Wanna cyber?

[HandsomeRyan] not really, i think your a 32 year old man...

[DucatiHottie] No, I'm a young beautiful bisexual girl who wants your body

[HandsomeRyan] i think dinners ready, i have to go

[HandsomeRyan] **exits chat**

if you want to chat with someone on here just exchange AOL IM screen names.
