Bay Area roads for beginners

I'll be taking the MSF class in a couple of weeks in the San Francisco Bay Area then buying a bike thereafter. I was wondering if anyone could suggest some roads around here, preferably in the south bay which are new biker friendly. I imagine most of my initial riding will be around the neighborhood getting used to the bike and working on my skills. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
