Kickstart Battery Question

Hi guys, I had a question regarding a battery to a kickstart ('81 Suzuki GN 400). I found out that the bike doesn't need a battery to run (although you should have a battery of course so the generator doesn't burn out trying to power everything) but how would I know if my battery was going weak or even dead? The previous owner told me the battery does not run any lights so I don't really know how I know when the battery would be dead or weak. I know with the key on, and the bike off, the only lights I can get are the tail light and the dash lights. Thanks for any advice in advance.

take it to an auto parts place, they should be able to test it for you if you dont have a multi meter (I dont knwo how to test battery with one though, sorry)
