1984 Virago 750XV has an issue or 2

#1 Unread post by Bellsy »

I recently purchased this bike and after finally getting it out for a good run, I have discovered an issue or two with it.

The problems are related, that I am quite sure of. The first thing I noticed was that after @ 30 mins. of riding the bike one cylinder wants to cut out while accelerating. I have no idea which cylinder it is because when I stop the bike the prblem either goes away or the bike stalls.

The second issue is that when I back off of the throttle during this event, the bike backfires quite a bit. When I try to accelerate by openning the throttle up (slightly excessive) the bike will sometimes (cough and backfire) then seem to run smooth again.

I have had the bike to a shop and the mechanic was hard pressed to be able to repeat the problem. No doubt he didn't want to spend that amount of time riding it about to see the cause of it. (Just my opinion...ha ha) Anyway, if I continue riding the bike after @ 30 mins. the problem seems to go away....most times. I have a feeling that this is an electrical issue with possibly the coil or the igniter. Don't quote me on the igniter, as I have been reading my newly acquired Haynes Manual and I can't seem to find anything related to my symptoms.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance..... :|

If you feel for a cold exhaust pipe it will at least let you know what cylinder it is and chances are that carb is giving some problems
