Was I too easy on it?

#1 Unread post by spinner »

Firstly I'd like to say what a huge help this forum has been. I've only been a member for a short time, but I've learned so many things here the MSF doesn't teach.

I just finished the break-in period for my '06 GSX-R 600. I did what the manual said and stayed under 8k rpm... maybe only bringing it up there a couple times. I also strictly followed the recommended shifting speeds for the first few hundred miles. Then I began shifting more liberally so I ran around 4-5k rpm (I do alot of around town riding, 30-60mph. Maybe spent 30 miles total on the highway doing about 80mph).

I'm proud of myself for using such self control on my new bike to make sure it runs for a long long time. Then a skeptical rider told me it was a bad idea, that I just glazed my cyclinders and now it's too late. I took what he said with a grain of salt, thinking Suzuki knows what's best for their machines. But I'm hearing more and more that I really needed to run it MUCH harder. Did I just f*** everything up for myself? :|

Your bike will be fine, don't stress over it. There are different opinions on this subject and I have a hard time believing that one is better than the other.

For what it's worth I think you did the right thing . And I don't think you lost anything for it .

Racers break in there motors diferently than the average user. Your bike is broke in for the long run, not just 500 of the fastest laps possible before the motor blows.

Your very first motorcycle has 120HP?

If you are lucky, your break-in technique reduced your engine to half that much power.

But in all likelyhood, you still have the full 120.

You'll be fine. Both my bikes settled in at around 1000 miles and felt stronger.

Put some frame sliders on there, pal. Thats one beautiful and vulnerable faring. Gear up and and use your brain to control that throttle.

Thanks for the replies all. :)

Yes, I do wear full leathers whenever I ride, no matter how hot it gets. Fortunately it doesn't get *that* bad here in the northeast.

My bike is still unmodified, but a scorpio alarm system is on the way and I am going to get the sliders (almost slipped on some mud in a parking lot the other day, woke me up to how easy it is to drop a bike). This is my baby, and I want to do everything I can to keep it in perfect condition.

Also, signing up for the ERC.. hopefully will get into a class before August.
