a few brushy mountain ride pics

#1 Post by BigChickenStrips » Wed Jul 05, 2006 8:54 am

i recently went with a group (not from this forum) to brushy mountain in east TN. its about 25 miles of solid curves. fun times.

you can see we had a varied group- a gixxer-600, my ninjette, a speed tripple, 2 cruisers (not sure what kind), an 85' honda 500, and 3 dual sport bikes.
(i out-rode the gsxr in the turns, but he had no problem smoking me in the straights. i guess its a matter of engine power vs. rider ability)

here is my bike going off-road

ME leaning that "poo poo" over!

Image
i wont lie- this girl is WAY faster than me. i got owend by her in the curves.

also, if i may say...

you mentioned you were faster than the guy on the gixxer600 and you mentioned the girl is faster than you.

you seem a little too concerned on who's faster.

just enjoy the ride.

if you say that i care about speed, yes i do... but im only competing against myself. im not racing anyone... yet.

verm your right. i give you all kinds of hell so its only fair if you can give some back. but what i was trying to point out is that having a sweet bike doesnt mean anythign if you cant back it up with some skill in the saddle. her bike is an older 2-stroke dual sport, most people would nnt think that would be worth a damn on a twisty road but she rides it liek a champ and makes it work for her. on the other hand, a gixxer600 would be one of the best bikes (next to yours) for a tight twisty road like this but that guy got out-ridden by a much inferior bikes because he spent his time tryng to control the power of his bike (and doing roll-on power wheelies) instead of learnign to lean and shift his weight and whatnot.

but your right i should not be racing anyone but myself. and i still have a long way to go before i can ride like that girl.

and to answer the question Brushy
Mountain TENNESSEE (there is one in NC too but i have never been there) is north west of knoxville in eastern TN. if you are familiar with oak ridge (where the A-bombs were built) it is about 15 miles north of there just past a little town called oliver springs. i think it is called TN Hwy 116? awesoem road. i am blessed to live abotu 30 minutes from there and about 50 minutes from "the dragon" (deals gap) the finest motorcycle road in the country. although i prefer brushy mtn because it isnt as well known and isnt as crowded. i may be going to ride the Cherahola (sp?) Skyway this weekend so i'll hopefully get some more pics. (maybe i'll take the girfriends camera as these pics all came out blurry.

doing wheelies takes skill too you know.

also, if he's riding in the twisties, he'll improve his turning skills too.

and... im also guilty on what you did on that pic... sometimes, i ride too close to the dbl yellow lines. but it's not bad as long as the corner is not blind.

Tight left turns

  • Quote

#9 Post by M109R » Wed Jul 05, 2006 3:37 pm

One thing I noticed in almost all of the pics is that everyone is hugging that yellow line on the leftys. Very dangerous if that were a blind curve with a cager or bus crossing or holding tight to the center line as well (which anyone on curves sees regularly.)

Better to make an imaginary line to the right of the center to give some safety margin and a longer turn. Your head can actually pass 2-3 feet over center on a left curve.

Don't want to be a pain but still hope this saves someone's life someday.

Isn't there a place just north of Knoxville called the witches triangle or something like that?

Yeah, what alot of people don't know is that east TN has alot of good roads other than the gap.
