A lesson to be learned...

Learned a lesson this weekend: Never set your gear down on top of a cleverly disguised fire ant hill. Because I promise you won't notice every single one of those little buggah's when you decide to put it back on!

Looks like I had several in my right glove, a few in my jacket, and a few in my helmet. Somehow one even managed to sneak up my pants and get me on the right calf.

We don't have fire ants in Ohio, is the bite serious or like a bee sting ? Just curious. Xs

Don't sting as much as a bee.. but quite a bit more than a mosquito, though. You get a nice sting and the thing itches like mad for days.

We have fire ants down here in GA. Those things are wicked mean! You have my sympathy for setting your gear down on one of those hills.

I try to keep all my gear either on my person, anchored to the bike, or inside a house.

We were taught that in the MSF course. Shame on you for setting gear on the ground. I take my gear with me, the only time I left it on the bike was at a bike meet/parts swap. I am pretty confident that a biker wont steal my gear in such a setting, I wouldnt leave my new Shoei behind now though.

He may have been standing right next to it.

I always put my gear on the ground because it is one place my helmet can't fall off.

This should answer your question nicely.

I set my gear down right after my lowside. My first and foremost thought was not "now, where can I safely set my gear so that it will not become ant ridden?" It was "my poor bike! Argh!" I was standing right next to it, but since we were trying to re-attach some of the plastics on my bike I didn't think that setting my gear on it would be the best of ideas...and it was hot as the dickens so I didn't really want to leave it on while we were at a standstill...so the ground was the next most logical choice. It was all grassy, looked so harmless. M HMM! Bad idea! The itching has died down a good bit, but I've still got some bites on me.

glad it wasn't worse than it was, could have been nasty

next time, practice your telekinises and just levitate your gear a couple feet off the ground behind you.
