New tranny cost?

#1 Unread post by MrGromit »

I have an '80 CB750F with almost 70k on it. The engine has been rebuilt but the transmission is grumbling a lot lately.

What should I expect to pay to have it rebuilt? Is it something I can just find a new one and stick it on?

Um. I hate to tell you this, but the transmission is IN the engine, meaning you have to take the whole rebuilt engine apart to get the transmission out.

In other words, it's best left to a pro and it's going to cost alot. I don't know what kind of problems you've been having, but sometimes upgrading to better oil will eliminate some trans problems.

You could have told me a little nicer. I mean, talk about a total buzz-kill...

But seriously

I think I knew that. I've only had it for about a month and it's my first bike. I've realized that I'm becoming more "attuned" to the machine lately. It's likely okay as it is; I was just looking for some mental math if something went wrong.

Thanks for the oil tip!
