Watch those toes...

...So I'm coming up to this nice 45 deg. left turn at a pretty good clip...I've taken this turn countless times...but this time it's different...Because of the speed I was carrying, I dropped smoothly into the turn carrying enough lean angle to scrape my left peg. Unfortunately I was uncharacteristically unmindful of my foot position and JUST LIKE THAT asphalt catches toe of boot, rips my foot off the peg and torques it back. I gassed it to straighten up...a tiny wobble and that was that.

Let's hear it for tight, well fitting BOOTS!!!

Now, wtf did I do wrong???

Sounds like you had your foot under the shifter. On hard turns where I expect to scrape a peg, I always keep my foot on the top side of the shifter until the lean angle decreases. It's a rare turn where you'll need to upshift in the middle of it.

Interesting. My pegs are quite small and I'm certain if I ever scraped my pegs, my foot would be in contact with the ground also.

Yah...that's for sure...luckily it was dragged off to the side...otherwise there would have been a resounding SNAP followed by some intense swearing and probably some screaming...

Funny, all the replies are probably spot on... By being unmindful, I displeased the bike gods possibly by having my foot under shifter...plausible...hmm...I'm glad all I got was a solid reminder...

I've done that before, I just gunned it and things turned out okay. Was a heck of a surprise though.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

This month's (or lasts month's) Sport Rider magazine talks about foot position and they recommend keeping the balls of your feet on the pegs except when you have to shift or brake... It took me 2 weeks for it to become natural but in my opnion it feels better and I don't have to worry about getting spooked when my boot touches the ground :)

I scraped my toes while in the MSF course, scared the crap out of me too, and that was only going 20mph.
