How long until second bike?

So my question to all of you is, how long was it until you moved on from your beginner bike size to a larger? When you feel comfortable enough I'd assume, but is there an average ammount of time or just when you mastered the basics and or more?

This is one of those questions that, if you have to ask, you aren't ready.

At some point in mastering the basics and your first ride, you'll realize that you want more of 'something' that you don't have with the first ride.

<For me, starting on an 18 yr old, 250cc, I wanted to be able to go on the highway occasionally (and I wanted something 'prettier').

The NEXT 'need' was to be able to maintain highway speeds with me, AND a weekend's worth of stuff on board.>

+1. When you are ready you know it. When your current bike doesnt do what you need it to do ie: highway speeds, carry luggage, suit your needs in the twisties, etc etc. Then it is time to upgrade. Getting a new bike cause a faster model came out, or cause chicks dont dig your current bike is dumb. When your current bike no longer does it for you, then you think about gettin a 2ed bike.

I don't even ride yet, I was simply curious as to what you all seemed to average.

Yeah I agree with the other posters. It really depends on the person. One person could take a week, a month or a year to feel comfortable moving "up" from a 250. Some people are more than just happy being on the same bike they started on.

It also really depends on how often you ride.

If you only get out there on the weekends, then it will take longer to master the basics and 'need' to move up. But if you commute 50 miles daily, then you're gonna make that improvement faster.

if you wait until you master the basics... you might not get a 2nd bike.

i dunno how many people here can honestly say they have mastered the basics. im sure i'll still practice the basics for the rest of my riding.

which reminds me... i need to do my monthly PLP some time before this month ends.

but to me... if you're already comfortable w/ the basics... then it's ok to move up to the bike you want.

Seems like nobody has actually answered the question, so I'll take a shot.

One year. I moved up from my KZ400 to a KZ750 after a year. Since I had no other transportation besides the bike, that year translated into about 15,000 miles. I got the bigger bike for the extra power on my highway ride to work (60 miles roundtrip over a steep mountain pass).

I put 4000km on my LS650 as a first bike in one season.

Then I got my Honda 599, put 7000km on it the next season. I've put about 14000 on it this season so far.

ok, i'll answer.

i got my 2nd, and current bike, after 4 months. but i was bikeless for 2 months before i got my 2nd bike.
