Starter interlock prob...

Had a mildly amusing one this morning.... I gear up and hop on my ninjette, ignition to on (oil light lights), pull the clutch, ignition kill off, hit the starter... nothing...
So went through the basics... kick stand position (down, but I flipped it up), gear (1st, but I switched it to neutral)... I flipped switches, turned the ignition off and on, still nothing.
Then I released the clutch lever and tried it... started right up.
So I shut it down and went through the same thing again... in neutral, ignition on, clutch in, holding the starter button I get nothing -- I release the clutch (while holding the starter) and "rerumumumum....." it's running.
Shrug.. I still needed to get to work, so I rode off on my merry way.
So now, after an hour+ ride, I'm at work. I park the bike (in gear), put the side stand down, then say "let's see if this works" and (holding the clutch) hit the starter... starts right up. I shut it down and try without holding the clutch... nothing.... so it is working normally again.
So... any thoughts? Switch? Wiring? Something else? I don't want to tear everything apart looking for gremlins, but I also don't want to get stuck somewhere without any starter at all.
