Who's got a 250? Is a 250 too small
Hey Guys,
So I've had several people tell me that I will get reaaly tired of this bike within a few months of riding (since it is only a 250)
I am planning on doing some commuting to and from work on the bike (~25 each way) on highway.
Does anyone have experience riding a 250 at highway speeds? Do they have enough get up and go to pass an 18-wheeler going 75mph?
-2 weeks til I get my 89 VTR250

unless you weigh more than the bike... i don't think it will be too small.
i can't find specs for that year model...
oldest i saw was a '98 model and it has 32bhp... same as the ninjette. it should be highway capable ...just be careful on-ramps.

I put over 16,000 miles on a Ninja 250 before I got a bigger bike. I still didn't have that bike "mastered" by a longshot. It has plenty of power for ANYONE. It can hit 105MPH (ahem - so I've heard). I don't care if you're 6'3" and 250lbs, it will be more powerful than any beginner can imagine.napoleon_e wrote:So I've had several people tell me that I will get reaaly tired of this bike within a few months of riding (since it is only a 250)

Trust me, if you put Valentino Rossi on a Ninja 250, he will be WAY faster than any college boy on a GXR-750.

[b]Are you a beginner rider?
Have a lot of questions about motorcycling?
Not sure what bike to start with?

I ride what's in my sig.
Passing a 18 wheeler going 75 mph is only going to happen on a downhill or a slight downgrade and if the 18 wheeler is doing his thing to get better gas mileage by hauling more "O Ring", pfft. Forget it.
I can get my bike up to 85mph (max mph on my speedometer) on the highway and that's on a GOOD down grade. If you are going up a good grade be prepared to max throttle around 70-75mph.
Do I do fine on the highway? Yes.
Am I going to be setting any speeding records on my bike? No.

the honda rebel is different from the ninjette^
and to aswer your question- the ninjette does fine on the interstate, i wouldnt want ot use ti as a tourign bike to go cross country, but i ride 100 miles round trip to-from deals gap (www.dealsgap.com) several times a week and it does fine. as far as it being slow or boreing- if you live in FL and the only roads you have are straight, get a cruiser or a busa becasue this bike was made to eat curves. many a larger sport bike has had their butts handed to them by the 20 horsepower ninjette becasu it teaches propper riding skill in stead of doing what all new riders do and practice accelerating hard i nthe straightaways to compensate for how slow they take the turns. its a fun bike and good value for the money.
is it the last bike you'll ever want to own? absolutly not
is it the best first bike money can buy? heck yeah!
im 6'2", 240lbs, i have had mine for 5 months and put almost 6000 miles on it already. i need better gear (leathers with knee sliders) before im going to be able to ring much more performance out of it, but i can ride the thing at about 85% of the bikes capabilities and its a blast.

FWIW, I have a 535cc Virago cruiser. It has more pickup with a passenger at 70 mph than my girlfriend's Civic. I can pass an 18 wheeler on a slight uphill at 70 mph without too much issue.. I do have to open the throttle all the way, though.

He isn't getting a Ninja 250, he is getting this:

That is a picture I took this morning of my 1989 Honda VTR250 Interceptor. Top speed is slightly over 100mph, although it takes about as long as a 4 cylinder car to go from 75-100. Not too bad for a 17 year old motorcycle with a 250cc v-twin. Mine only has 14,500 miles on it.
This bike has no problem with highway speeds, or even freeway/interstate speeds. However, crosswind can make the ride less enjoyable on the freeway if it's a windy day. Even though I have since purchased my 600cc sportbike that is about as quick as a Ferrari Enzo, I will never sell my VTR because it is so much fun to ride. I definitely recommend it!
