Chain Slip/transmittion issue

#1 Unread post by cpsparks »

I have a strange problem- I believe that my chain slipped off my front sprocket.

Here's the situation:

I was riding on the highway, going about 80, in gear and I hear a single Chu-Chunk sound come from the gear box. My first thought was that my chain broke, because the engine still sounded completely normal- normal rpm, engine pitch, etc... The strange thing was that I had absolutely no power going to the rear tire; I was just gliding along as if I were in neutral. I pull over to the shoulder and realize that I am able to change gears without using the clutch. I inspected the chain, and although there was far less tension than normal, it appeared to be intact.

Did my chain slip off the front sprocket? Is my clutch dead? I have done some research and feel that it’s more of a transmission issue than clutch, but I'm not sure. Thanks for any ideas!

my first thought would be slipping off the sprocket since you heard a noise..It should be pretty easy to take off the chain cover, so you should be ble to rule that one out pretty quickly.
