Best Time to Buy a bike and get a good deal

#1 Unread post by zulu warrior »

What is the best time to buy? I just passed my written test yesterday and I'll take the safety couse in Sept/Oct 06 or Spring 07.

Question is when to buy? I getting a used Ninja 250/500 and it will be parked in a public garage.

a) I could get the bike in Oct/Nov and store it at my parents' garage (no fee). My thinking is that people want to sell their bike so that they don't have to store it during the winter, upgrading next year, etc. I assume I would get a bit of a discount.

b) I could wait and get the bike in the spring, but then I'll have to deal with bikes that may have not been properly winterized. I'm sure that I would also pay a little extra since it would be the beginning of the riding season.

It all depends if you want new or used. Buying new from a dealer in the fall would have a better chance at pricing since the dealers usually want to get rid of last years model to make room for next year.

If you want to buy used, your theory on winterizing only works for those who bought their bikes new in the spring or summer and have yet to store it for the first time in winter. Otherwise, an older bike has been stored in the winter....and several times as the age of the bike increases.

moto, i'm sure sev's offer is still on the table, and i'll even pony up for a couple. there's no way you're getting a new vtx1800 for less than ten grand. hell, left over 05's are starting at $10500. go back to fantasy land and make kicking motions at the harley riders you're so jealous of.

I bought my Rebel in Dec. MSRP was $3099. I bought a helmet that day also and it was still only $2895 +tax. It was snowing when I rode it home. I get good deals on cars also in the month of Dec

Well, I can tell you when *not* to buy:

Spring in the Southwest.

Nice weather, high AZ gas prices and bikes are flying out of dealerships at MSRP+.

Personally if you're buying new i'd wait till the new year. MY self, i wouldn't want to buy brand new bike, hardly break it in and have to store it all winter and still pay on it.

As for the whole used thing. If it wasn't stored properly last year chances are the powner has fixed what was needed to get it running a gain (carb rebuild, new plugs etc. I'd be worried about buying used at the start of the season. You will have stuff to replace if it wasn't stored properly.

If you want used, buy it now and store it properly yourself. If you want new wait, chances are if in the spring there still might be a few leftovers, but they will have sat in a heated showroom all winter.

Thanx for all your input. It looks like I'm going to wait until 2007.
