Boxer Cup riders in action at A.M.I.D Show

Besides the many exhibits on show at this year’s A.M.I.D motorcycle and quad lifestyle expo at Kyalami race circuit, to be held on April 30 to May 2, the spectacle of the day should come from the 30+ riders competing in the BMW Motorrad/Superbike SA Magazine invitation race.

The series has seen no less than 32 entrants fighting for a space of the tarmac at each of the two rounds held so far this year, and the 10-lapper on Sunday, May 1, will be no exception.

While Sunday’s race won’t count toward the championship standings, riders at the top of the championship log will be using the opportunity to good effect to further establish the pecking order in the one make series, and get in some much needed seat time in preparation for the third round to be held at Zwartkops on May 14.

One of these will be Wian Erasmus, who after four races, finds himself at the top of the leader board, while Cape Town’s Paul Medell has hauled himself up the points ladder to second and is on 61 points after a slow start at the first round held at Zwartkops.

Pretoria’s Grant Scott (49 points) has shown steady improvement and finished consistently in the points to find himself in third, while Midrand’s Rob Holder, currently in fourth overall on 46 points, is getting faster on each outing, and is likely to find himself bumping fairings with Reg Gurnell, Willem Janse van Rensburg and Dewald Winterbach, who is leading the veteran class by a proverbial mile.

Others to watch include Braam Smit, Wayne Fritz, Dino De Wet, Jacques Nel and Gary Coetzer, while Bike SA’s Simon Fourie accounted for himself well in Cape Town and could be the thorn in the side of the second group of riders.

The grid will be hat-drawn at 10am on Sunday, May 1, and the rather spectacular, cylinder-scraping BMW 1100 RS machines will take to the track at noon for a hotly contest race.
