How did this happen? A tragic accident dissected...

So, what do you think is the cause of this tragedy?

25 year veteran rider. He's always ridden cruisers.
Last bike was a Vulcan 2000 with a 26.8 inch seat ht.
For a change of pace, the rider purchases a GSX R750. Seat ht 31.9 inches.
The rider can just get his toes down on both sides of the 750 but as a veteran rider, this does not concern him. The bike is fun.

The set-up:

While out for a ride on his 750, the rider approaches an intersection, with a traffic signal that has turned red for his direction of travel.

There are two lanes going the same direction he is.

The rider is in the right hand lane behind several cars. There is an 18 wheeler and other traffic in the left lane. As the rider BRAKES, slows, and attempts to put his feet down, he loses his footing and the bike falls over with the rider. The truck is still moving, and the rider is killed by the rear wheels of the truck.

So, what would you say is/are the factor(s) leading to this tragedy?

why did he try to put his feet down on the ground instead of using the brakes? im a bit confused by that since this isnt an episode of the flinstones.

did he lowside into the left lane under the truck?

being able to flat foot the bike shoudnt be an issue if he was breaking properly.

It sounds like he was trying to put his feet down right as he came to a stop, not before.

He fell down.

He was right beside the truck as he stopped, the truck was still rolling. He tried putting his left foot down, slipped and fell over to the left, going under the passenger side rear tires of the truck.

As for reasons... too short, and way too far to the left in his lane? He'd pretty much have to be on the line to stick that much into the other lane from a simple tip over.

That's one accident scene I'd like to never see. Yikes.

Unless the truck was on the line. Some of those trucks barely fit on thin-lane roads.

It sounds like the rider was way too close to the truck. Any time you come to a stop it's possible to lose your footing (i.e. oil or other fluids pooled at an intersection). IMHO, you should never be in a position where simply tipping over would put you under the wheels of a moving vehicle in the next lane.

Yeah, you shouldn't be on the road unless you have the right bike and the right amount of money to spend. (<- a joke)
