Kenya Motorsport Foundation (KMSF) chairman Maina Muturi announced on Wednesday that Kenya got the chance following Uganda's failure to be ready to host the event on time.

“Our neighbours Uganda were falling behind schedule to host the event and would not have been ready on time so, after much lobbying we were given the chance to host the event,” said Muturi.

East Africa motorcycle union chairman Sunil Vinayak said it was such an honour for Kenya to host the continental championships just four yaers after hosting the 2002 edition.

“To host the event even once is a great enough achievement but to host it twice is phenomenal as no other country has done it in Africa,” said Vinayak.

Muturi was speaking after receiving Sh300,000 sponsorship cheque from Brookhouse School towards this year’s East African motorcross challenge.

The regional challenge will be held at Jamhuri park on Sunday.

Kenya are the defending champions and captain Anthony Nielsen said that the team is ready to defend its title.

“We have entered a very strong team with five riders in every category since we are the home team. We won it last year and we want to defend it especially since we will be riding on our home track,” he said.

Nielsen added that he expects competition from Uganda and Congo, “on a team basis, Uganda will provide the stiffest test but individually, Congo riders are among the best.”
