Motorcycle run to benefit Highland Manor residents

Peggy Reed hopes the weather will be nice and sunny with no ice on the ground when bikers join together once again for the second annual Highland Manor stocking stuffer motorcycle run on Saturday.
The run includes participants from motorcycle and car clubs to bring needed items to the residents of Highland Manor of Fallon, a skilled nursing facility.
"You don't have to be a member of any club to join in the fun," said Reed, the coordinator for the event.
Reed said she expects 50 to 75 participants for the run. It will begin at the old Wal-Mart parking lot at 10:15 a.m. and end a couple of miles away at Highland Manor, 550 N. Sherman St. The cost to be in the ride is one stocking stuffer item for residents of the facility.
"Santa will be there, and we encourage parents to bring their kids," she said. "We really like to see the interaction with the residents of the manor during the event."
Highland Manor has residents of all ages and needs, said Reed. Some live at the manor temporarily and some are permanent, depending upon disability, illness or recovery time, she said.
"Rehabilitation can sometimes take a long time, and for some it is never ending," she said. "We do this to bring a little happiness into their lives."
She said it is always nice to see the community's participation in events like this.
"This is another holiday program to help bring joy into the lives of those that may not feel as joyous this time of year," said Reed.
Many local businesses and individuals have helped with cash donations, gift baskets and raffle items, said Reed. However, one unique gift, knitted scarves, are being provided by Heidi Emke's fifth grade class of Lahontan Elementary School.
Highland Manor will be providing a lunch for all the participants, she said.
"I would like to thank the community for always supporting me in my endeavors to help others," said Reed. "The people of this community never cease to amaze me with their generosity."
Anyone can help, even if unable to participate in the run, by donating items or adopting a resident. For more information on the run, call Peggy Reed at 867-4351. To adopt a resident, call Lacie Karol at 423-7800.
