Off-road motorcyclists rescued after Sierra snowstorm

NEVADA CITY – Two Santa Cruz men who became stranded in the snow during a weekend off-road motorcycle trip in the Tahoe National Forest were found uninjured Monday morning.

Rescue crews located Aaron Lakey and Eric Scott, both 36, just before 10 a.m. about a mile from where their pickup truck was parked, the Nevada County Sheriff's Department said. The men had sought shelter in a vacant cabin and had no reported injuries.

A friend alerted authorities Saturday evening after Lakey and Scott failed to return home, the department said. Rescue crews on Sunday found their pickup in the forest about 15 miles east of Nevada City.
The men reportedly lost their way Saturday during a storm that dropped about eight inches of snow in the area. The National Weather Service had issued a snow advisory that day for the western slope of the Sierra.

By Monday, the snow had stopped and temperatures were above freezing in the area where Lakey and Scott were located. About 100 sheriff's deputies and volunteers took part in the search effort, including some on snowmobiles.
